Phoenix, AZ  路  Private Christian  路  The plan, not one more option

Grand Canyon University

BS in Entrepreneurial Studies, Ingram Honors College, Canyon Ventures next door. This is where the other six schools were pointing.

How he got here, updated 8/23

Over one evening Cooper eliminated every other school on this site himself: Pepperdine (price, tennis unreachable), Point Loma and Biola (food), plus three schools never built here, Texas A&M (distance), UW (didn't want to stay home), ASU Barrett (party culture). Stanford was never a target. Cal Baptist and Baylor are also off the active list as of tonight, without a specific reason recorded.

GCU is not a seventh option on the comparison. It is the plan. The rest of this site is kept as the record of how he ruled everything else out. See the full elimination trail.

What he's applying to

Grand Canyon University, Phoenix. BS in Entrepreneurial Studies (Colangelo College of Business), Ingram Honors College, apartment housing, club tennis, mc-tools as the main project, Canyon Ventures as the target for the company.

The major changed on 8/23

He was headed toward a BS in Artificial Intelligence until he identified as an operator-founder rather than an engineer, verbatim: "ultimately I never want to work for anyone else." The major box on the application is non-binding, so this is a statement of intent, not a locked-in commitment.

Cost at your numbers

Tuition, frozen an 18th consecutive year$16,500
Fees$1,420
Housing, standard$7,962
Food$3,400
Direct bill$29,282
Chancellor scholarship, automatic−$7,250
Net direct~$22,000
Books $1,086 + personal $2,020 + transportation $1,190+$4,296
All-in~$26,300 / yr

Against the schools already on this site: Biola ~$40,800 direct, Point Loma ~$42,000, Cal Baptist ~$37,800. GCU runs about $18,800/yr below Biola, roughly $75,000 over four years.

A lower band is plausible, do not treat it as his number

Apartment housing with GCU's dining-dollar minimum, plus a won Honors College Scholarship, could pull the all-in figure toward $19,000 to $24,000/yr. That is a band, not a promise. Plausible, not confirmed

Two retired numbers, do not use either

An earlier pass on this project used ~$17,300/yr, built by subtracting a $12,000 Chancellor figure taken from a third-party summary rather than GCU's own page. GCU's own aid page says the Chancellor award is $7,250, not $12,000. Both the $12,000 and the $17,300 built on it are wrong. Use $22,000 direct, $26,300 all-in.

The scholarship grid, from GCU's own page

AwardPer yearQualifies on
Chancellor$7,2504.0 unweighted GPA. No test score at all
Chancellor-IB$6,250IB Diploma
President$6,0003.9+ GPA, or SAT 1410, or ACT 31
Provost$5,0003.7-3.89, or SAT 1295, or ACT 27
Dean$4,0003.3-3.69, or SAT 1130, or ACT 22
Faculty$3,0003.0-3.29, or SAT 1000, or ACT 19
Antelope$1,0002.8-2.99

Cooper spotted the $6,000 / 1410 President tier himself and was right that it exists. His 4.0 puts him one tier above it, at the top of the grid. Worth saying plainly why there is no SAT story on this page: Chancellor is the top of the grid and uses no test score at all, so no SAT result could add a dollar at GCU.

None of the following are folded into the $22,000, so the real number could come down further: the Honors College Scholarship (GCU's own words, "competitive, application-based" and "not guaranteed"), a Priority Registration Award, the GCU Award for out-of-state students, and the Canyon Christian Schools Consortium Award.

馃毃 The one time-sensitive thing on the whole page

Chancellor awards are limited in number and first-come, first-served.

GCU's own aid sheet, verbatim: "The Chancellor award is the only scholarship level that requires an unweighted GPA for eligibility. There are a limited number of Chancellor awards and they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis."

So applying early is not just about rolling admission. It may decide whether he gets the biggest automatic award available to him. The application is free. That line is from GCU's 2022-23 aid sheet and could not be confirmed for the current cycle. The asymmetry still holds: applying now costs nothing.

Owner: Cooper, this week

Ingram Honors College

He double auto-admits, and the honors college is a network and logistics upgrade, not a different curriculum.

GCU's requirements page, verbatim, for automatic acceptance with no secondary application: "Cumulative, unweighted high school GPA of 3.8 or greater" OR "ACT composite score of 31 or greater" OR "SAT score (combined verbal and math) of 1410 or greater", plus "Demonstrated passion for community service and leadership."

Do not write "no essay, no committee"

He clears both numeric bars easily at 4.0 and 1470. But the fourth criterion, demonstrated service and leadership, is qualitative and stated as part of the gate, not a formality. It belongs in how this gets described.

The strongest honest argument for honors, and it would be marketing to omit it

GCU publishes no honors-specific student-to-faculty ratio. They say only "smaller class sizes." Unverified, GCU does not publish this number What is published: GCU overall runs 21:1 against a roughly 15:1 national average, with about 9% full-time faculty versus roughly 47% nationally. That gap, not a marketing line, is the real case for why the honors college matters to him.

From the hand-off, not GCU's own pages, badge accordingly ~3,000 honors students, ~960 new per year, 391 honors-only sections, ~75 industry speakers a year, an honors diploma notation, and a 3.25 GPA required to stay in.

Canyon Ventures

The startup incubator adjacent to campus, run out of Colangelo. Free office space for companies, which hire GCU students as paid interns, plus a Canyon Angels investor network and a VC partnership.

Two doors, walk in during the campus visit

A paid internship at a startup as a freshman, or mc-tools itself applying for a spot, which is exactly their stated profile: a revenue-generating, student-run business. The plan is to walk into Canyon Ventures in person during the campus visit rather than apply cold.

From the hand-off, not verified against Canyon Ventures' own materials 54 students placed, 16 companies involved.

馃攽 The deferral question

His April plan has three doors: enroll, enroll and defer a year, or the no-college conversation. The middle door looks free. It may not be.

The exact question to ask, in writing, before April

"Does a Registration Commitment preserve the Chancellor scholarship specifically, or does deferring move me into the gap and transfer program, which has no Chancellor tier?"

What he has to do, in order

  1. GCU application, free, this week. Plus the honors application in the same week. Locks nothing, holds the Chancellor line. Owner: Cooper
  2. Ask a counselor: Chancellor renewal terms, whether honors and Chancellor stack, the deferral question above, and what minors stack with Entrepreneurial Studies.
  3. Sept 30: Coca-Cola Scholars. $20,000, income-blind. Still the nearest deadline on the site
  4. File FAFSA when it opens, expected around Oct 1 2026, has run late in recent cycles. File it regardless of the $0-need conclusion elsewhere on this site.
  5. Campus visit, including walking into Canyon Ventures in person.
Not ours to send

A drafted email to GCU Honors is Cooper's to send himself. Standing rule, reaffirmed by him repeatedly: no agent ever sends email from his accounts.

There is no SAT deadline anywhere on this site. Chancellor is GPA-only and is already the top of GCU's grid, so no test score could add money here.
